Visions
of the Future
"The
Last Actor" co-written with Mike Resnick in Martin H. Greenberg's
Future Americas, available from DAW Books and bookstores
everywhere. Television has long borrowed from plays and
films. Now, in a humorous, futuristic tale, the tables are
turned
and the stage looks to television's less stellar moments to borrow for
it. The story deals with one actor's attempt to regain the
stage's glory days.
Buy it from most major booksellers or at Amazon.
"As
Different as Night and Day" in Magic & Mechanica is
an
anthology of blended science fiction and fantasy. In my
story,
magic has always held sway over daylight, the source coming from the
sun. Only at night can technology operates as the sun-powered
devices disrupt the electro-magnetic lines powering technology with
disastrous results. The balance was maintained
until a
university student discovered a means of capturing moonlight for
magic. The clash ensues over which means is the
more
beneficial--magic or technology. Buy it from Ricasso
Press
"The
Star of Istanbul" in High Seas Cthulhu. While a pirates meet
Cthulhu story may not seem like science fiction, H.P. Lovecraft's
fabulously dark mythos is based on space faring elder races.
In
this story, which I co-wrote with my husband, Christopher Donahue, we
delve into that aspect. Warning, if you're a Lovecraft
purist, we
did write part of the story from the point of view of a Deep
One.
We did it in part to contrast the much more primitive mind-set of
humanity and to bring more of H.P.'s science fiction aspect to the
foreground. We're both long-time fans of the great author and
meant no disrespect whatsoever in breaking with his style. Check out titles from Elder
Signs Press
"Bubbot
vs Zombot" appears in Houston, We've Got Bubbas , the fourth
of
the Bubbas of the Apocalypse series. All the anthologies have
a
future setting, in which a virus has wiped out humanity, creating
zombies and leaving bubbas to fight them off. This volume is
farther into the future with stories set on alien worlds, space
stations, space ships and on the moon. My story deals with
classic science fiction . . . a battle between giant robots.
The
zombies have created a spaceship crashing robot. And the
bubbas
stranded on the planet fight back the only logical way they see--with a
robot built from junk. Check out Yard Dog Press.
"Bubbot
vs Zombot" reappears in The Best of the Bubbas. This anthology, a joint
project between Yard Dog Press and BenBella Books contains stories from
all four of the previous anthologies. My story originally
appeared in Houston, We've Got Bubbas. See what else BenBella Books publishes.
"Servant
of the Abyss" in Visages into the Void is in the log of anthologies
scheduled to come out from Elder Signs Press. The anthology
is
devoted to one of H.P. Lovecraft's characters, Nyarlathotep.
My
story is set in Yellowstone National Park, where Nyarlathotep makes his
appearance known to bio-researchers who study the viruses and bacteria
able to live in the park's hot, acidic pools. Look for this
anthology to come out from Elder Signs Press.
