Historicals
. . . but not quite history
A
Man, A Plan, (yet lacking) A Canal…PANAMA. My
novella
chapbook is a historical fantasy retelling of Captain Henry Morgan's
raid on Panama City. In researching, I read the accounts
published in the 1600s, including Morgan's own account to the Jamaican
Council. As such, it was my goal to make the tale fairly
accurate. However, I did add a fantasy element. I
explained
his phenomenally bad luck on Maya gods. Historically,
Panama's
president sent Morgan an emerald ring, a bribe not to come to
Panama. I hypothesized that this ring was stolen from a
fabled
emerald temple. As such, Morgan can see the gods acting
against
him, crashing his ships with wind and storm. Ultimately, he
must
face them in Xilbalba. Check out the many other great titles from Yard Dog Press.
"The
Star of Istanbul" can be found in High Seas Cthulhu. This anthology is
high seas swashbuckling, throughout a variety of historical times, and
H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu. This story, which I co-authored
with my
husband, Christopher Donahue, is set during the period of the Ottoman
Empire. Our main character, a vizier is sailing to the
Venetian
Doge with an artifact. The ship is captained by the
historical
figure, Captain Khidr, a red-bearded pirate called Barbarossa who
became Suleiman I's admiral. But there's more hazards out to
sea
than fighting against Maltese pirates. There's also Cthulhu's
Deep Ones. Check out other chilling books from Elder Signs Press.
"A
Cure For All Ills" appears in History is Dead. The anthology
is a
collection of zombie stories set throughout
history. Mine
is in 1666 London, England, that period between the Great Plague and
Great Fire of London. A plague doctor, one of the last to
remain
in London discovers there are things worse than the black plague. Check out all of Permuted Press's titles which are carried by Amazon and other booksellers.
"The Silver Branch" in The Phantom Queen Awakes, an anthology of
stories set in ancient Ireland, dealing with the Tri-Part goddess known
as The Morrigan, aka the Phantom Queen. My story deals with a clan
leader who makes a deal with the Morrigan to rid his people of their
enemies. Expect this anthology in October 2009 from Morrigan Books, out of England.
"The
Journey of White Sorrow" in Paper Blossoms, Sharpened Steel, an
anthology that's scheduled to come out from Fantasist Enterprises late
2009 or even 2010. The anthology is a collection of original
Oriental fantasy tales. Mine draws from Japanese and Chinese
mythology as well as folklore as a court poetess in the Heian era must
save the island. Look for this anthology late 2009 or early
2010
from Fantasist
Enterprises.
